Six or seven times a year, the city rearranges itself around a football game. If you rent on the Packard corridor and your parents or old college friends are driving in for a Saturday, the apartment turns into the base of operations for the day. Here is how a normal one runs.

Why the Packard corridor works for hosting

Michigan Stadium sits about a mile and a half west of 2111 Packard, on the far side of central Ann Arbor. The walk is real. Game-day traffic mostly clogs Stadium, Main, and South State, and the Packard corridor sees more cars than usual while still moving. A few blocks off Packard, the residential streets stay quiet.

What that gets you: guests can actually pull into the driveway when they show up. The walk to the stadium avoids the downtown crush. Your coffee shop and grocery store stay quiet long enough to matter.

Parking realities

The first question every guest asks. On-site parking at Packard Row is set up for residents, so a car or two of visiting family fits; a caravan does not. If more than two guest cars are landing, mix on-site parking for the closest family with street parking on the residential blocks a block or two off Packard for everyone else.

Streets one block off Packard usually have room. City meter enforcement shifts on game days, and posted signs sometimes add restrictions the app does not know about, so guests should read the actual sign on the block they park on. Streets closer to the stadium fill early. Streets closer to Packard Row often have space through kickoff.

For out-of-town guests, tell them to enter Ann Arbor from US-23 to Washtenaw and cut south to Packard rather than fight through downtown. That route stays clear of stadium traffic almost every week.

Walking to the Big House

Michigan Stadium is thirty-five to forty-five minutes on foot from Packard Row, depending on pace and which gate you are entering. The route runs west on Packard, cuts north on Division or State, then over to Main. Sidewalks the whole way. The walk out is the recovery activity the day needs. The walk back is when you notice you have been on your feet for six hours.

For a grandparent, a bad knee, or a stroller, walk out and rideshare back. Uber and Lyft pricing spikes for about ninety minutes after the game and comes back down. Queuing a few blocks off the stadium usually beats waiting for a car to fight the immediate perimeter.

A bike beats walking and locks up more easily than you would guess. The casual bike parking around the stadium does not disappear on game days.

Where guests actually sleep

A one-bedroom at Packard Row sleeps two guests on a good sofa. A two-bedroom sleeps a small family in the second bedroom and, if it comes to it, a second couple on a sofa in the living room. Air mattresses fit in either layout without moving furniture. Walk-in closets absorb the guest suitcases so the living room does not turn into a luggage rack.

By the Pound has the essentials if you skip Trader Joe's. The Drip House Coffee on Packard is a five-minute walk. The line moves fast and never breaks the way downtown coffee shops do on game days.

YORK Food and Drink, a few doors east of the Drip House, works for the pre-game group meal or the post-game recovery meal. Reservations for game weekends fill weeks out. A walk-in at 4:30 for an evening game, or 10:30 for a lunch after a noon game, usually finds a table.

Gameday morning

Coffee before 8. Groceries by 9. A slow late breakfast at the apartment while guests wake up. Layer for the weather by 11 for a noon game, or by 2 for a 3:30. Leave ninety minutes before kickoff so the walk is leisurely and the concession line is short. Mute the group chats an hour before kickoff so the tailgate spam stops feeling like an obligation.

For evening games it shifts. Guests can sleep in, brunch happens around 11, the middle of the day is unstructured, and the walk out goes around 5:30 for an 8:00 kickoff. The apartment turns into a nap venue, which older guests will appreciate.

Post-game exit strategy

The stadium empties into downtown, downtown empties into the neighborhoods, and the neighborhoods empty onto Stadium, State, and Main. The whole cascade takes about ninety minutes. During those ninety minutes the answer to "how do we get back to Packard" is walk, if the group is up for it, or wait it out at a bar or restaurant near the stadium for an hour.

Guests driving home the same night should plan to leave Ann Arbor after 8:30 on an afternoon-game Saturday, or the next morning after an evening game. The US-23 corridor south is often the cleanest exit. I-94 east is fine after the first ninety minutes.

Quiet-hours etiquette in a modern building

Packard Row is a 2025 build with modern acoustic construction, so a normal-volume post-game recap in the living room is nothing anyone else hears. What travels is the celebration on the balcony, the door slam at 1:15 a.m., and the rideshare arrival at 6:00 a.m. Sunday. Keep balcony conversation to indoor volume after 10 p.m. Bunch arrivals and departures into daylight hours if you can. Neighbors are gracious about game weekends.
